BIKE AND ROMANESQUE CHURCHES

We start from Ravenna cycling to Godo ( in Roman times there was a ford of the Tegurio river). Here we can admire the Parish Church of St. Stephen, similar to the original despite the widespread destruction of the Second World War. The central nave has pillars with rostrums and stone columns with ancient capitals.

After that, we move to the Pieve of San Pancrazio di Russi, one of the oldest Romanesque churches. An inside inscription shows its dating 963dc but the construction is protoromanica (eighth century), or commissioned by Galla Placidia, as the legend.

On the way to Bagnacavallo we will stop at the Palazzo San Giacomo a wonderful summer residence of the Conti Rasponi, a rich and important Ravenna's noble family.

We continue our ride to Bagnacavallo. Here we take a deserved rest, tasting local products in the splendid setting of this medieval town. Here we will visit the Church of San Pietro in Silvis, one of the best preserved Romanesque churches of Ravenna land, classic example of Exarchal architecture. The church was built close to an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter, near the eastern port, along the south bank of the Marshes, used by the Pilgrims, reaching Rome along the Via dei Romei.

We return cycling the countryside until our meeting point in Ravenna.
