Cycling trough the past, XV and XVI centuries, discovering the secrets of the Lords of Italy, expecially the Este, Sforza, Borgia dynasties, it's our aim. We are interested in the life of Caterina Sforza, the Countess of Forlì and Imola. She was engaged to Girolamo Riario, nephew of Pope Sisto IV, at only 10 years of age. Caterina, from an early age, distinguished herself by her bold and impetuous actions taken to safeguard her possessions from possible usurpers and to defend her dominions from attacks, when they were involved in political intrigues.
The 12/01/1500 the Duke Cesare Borgia, called il Valentino, took her as prisoner. She built a lot of magnificent castles, well preserved until today, that we will visit cycling trough the Bassa Romagna land.

The tour starts from Lugo di Romagna where we can visit, apart from the Rocca Estense (the rocca houses now the Museum of the First World War pilot Francesco Baracca), the eighteenth-century Portico del Pavaglione.
After that, we will cycle to the nearby Bagnara di Romagna where we will visit the magnificent "Rocca" of Caterina Sforza: she turned the castle into a defensive "modern" system in step with the introduction of heavy artillery in the military art. The Fortress of Bagnara became an example imitated by all the Renaissance lords, especially in Romagna.
The last stop of the tour is Imola, where we will visit another castle, that is a splendid example of fortified architecture from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, its origins date back to 1261. The Church of Rome, the noble dynasties of Alidosi, Visconti and Manfredi led Imola and its fortress. At the end of the fifteenth century the Sforza, and the new lord of Imola Girolamo Riario, nephew of Pope Sisto IV and husband of Caterina Sforza, transformed it into the present shape.
Returning to the starting point, we will take a little rest, drinking and eating genuine local food.
